Mandy Harvey, 29, lost her hearing when she was just 18-year-old due to a connective tissue disorder. All of her hearing nerves deteriorated leaving her deaf. This did not stop Mandy from pursuing her dreams of being a singer. The judging panel on America’s Got Talent was shocked to discover Mandy’s condition and were surprised to see that she was going to sing for her performance. Mandy gave up singing when she lost her hearing, but then she started training herself to use muscle memory, using visual turners and trusting her pitch. She almost gave up on her ambitions, but she wanted to do more with her life than to give up.
Her story and performance moved Simon Cowell, and he couldn’t help himself but press the Golden Buzzer. Mandy did not need her sign language interpreter to tell her what it meant, she instantly knew and was left teary. Mandy’s father was shocked and could not believe that she had gotten the golden buzzer.
